Abstract Before Albanian universities can profit from and contribute to globalization, they must first engage themselves fully in the Bologna Process. They must, in many ways, harmonize their practices with general European practices. The guaranteeing and the strengthening of academic freedom and institutional autonomy are essential and basic actions that must be taken in Albanian universities at the very start. At the same time, it should not be forgotten that academic freedom calls for academic responsibility, and that institutional autonomy calls for financial autonomy and corresponding responsibility.
