Abstract This article analyses the core instruments developed in the course of the Bologna Process and maintained in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) - in particular, recognition, qualifications frameworks, ECTS, and quality assurance - with special focus on their effects and their effectiveness for increasing mobility and internationalisation. While appreciating the fact that the EHEA, like the Bologna Process, sees both mobility and internationalisation as major political objectives, this article concentrates mainly on evaluating the technical aspects of the aforesaid key Bologna/EHEA instruments for facilitating mobility and internationalisation. Therefore, this article is essentially intended to explain the specific Bologna Process/EHEA instruments, and to advise on their application in order to stimulate the commitment of higher education institutions to develop mobility in international contexts.
