Captains of Industry whom we all have met, who know a modern university, frequently suggest it is the most complex organization they have ever encountered?much more complicated than their own businesses. The complexity of a university arises from shared decision making (sometimes called collegial governance), academic freedom, and the personalities of the dominant group of individuals?the tenured professors.
