Abstract European graduate schools in the social sciences and humanities encounter serious challenges and mixed results by offering interdisciplinary training, accommodating an international community of PhD candidates and achieving intersectoral collaboration. This article describes these challenges in terms of PhD candidates, staff, curriculum and the organisation of these schools and identifies some opportunities for improvement.
