Abstract Some two years after the winning of independence, the Parliament of Slovenia adopted a comprehensive Higher Education Law, that of 1993. In response to changed circumstances, the Slovenian Parliament amended this law quite considerably, in 1999. The broad outlines of the amendments of 1999, as they relate to the governance of higher education institutions, institutional autonomy, the funding of higher education, higher education admission requirements, and the internationalization of higher education are presented.
