Abstract Along with China’s rising economy and higher education sector, when it comes to internationalization there appears to be a shift toward a more balanced dynamic between importing the world to China and exporting China to the world. This chapter explores recent changes in the internationalization of China’s humanities and social sciences (HSS) and their relationship with the nation’s longstanding cultural struggles. The analysis uses English-language academic journals as an example to illustrate the efforts China is making to engage in dialogue with the world, with the argument that a cultural rationale is fundamental for understanding the internationalization of China’s HSS.
