Abstract Recent growth in participation of students on student mobility programmes has provided many more international learning opportunities. With the positive outcomes have also come incidents that have resulted in negative health and safety impact to students. This article provides a background on incidents that highlight potential worst-case scenarios for which plans can be developed to help avoid future incidents and assist institutions and students to more effectively respond when crises take place abroad. Sample policy and standards documents from the US are introduced to provide representatives of institutional, country, and regional organizations with models for review, which may help when developing reasonable guidelines and standards from the European context (HRK / Abstract übernommen)
