Abstract Universities play a key role in the innovation ecosystem. But there is a challenge: Can they be strategically used, developed and managed in a more innovative and efficient way, to respond to the global challenges of education and research in a digital world? Setting up multidisciplinary practices and spaces on campus in partnership with industry and society drive interaction among people, organisations and businesses for innovation. This paper presents two examples of the collaboration environments on different campuses in Finland. The focus is on the social, physical and digital concepts that support transdisciplinary collaboration within the university as well as collaboration among the university, industry and the public sector.
