Abstract In the Bucharest Communiqué of spring 2012 the European Ministers for higher education invited seven organisations – EUA, ENQA, ESU, EURASHE, EI, BUSINESSEUROPE and EQAR – to prepare a proposal for revised Standards and Guidelines for European Higher Education Area (ESG). This article presents an overview of the process that followed, discusses the key debates around the revision and reflects on the implications of the revision for the further development of quality assurance in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) after the adoption of the ESG 2015 in May 2015 at the Ministerial meeting in Yerevan.
