Abstract This article provides an overview of the development of internationalisation policies and practices in Brazil, mainly on governmental level. The authors describe the main characteristics of the internationalisation of Brazilian higher education, attempts to design public policies, previous successful mobility programmes and investments in recent decades. Relationships with BRIC countries and Mercosur are also highlighted, along with the trends in using English as language of instruction and building institutional partnerships from solid research links in strategic areas. With the slowdown of Brazil's economic growth, scarce governmental resources should be expected in the years to come. The days of abundant Brazilian funding are gone. New scenarios must arise: Institutions and countries that believe in the value of collaborating with Brazil need to commit funds to co-finance the operation. There are excellent opportunities for cooperation in research and mobility with Brazil. (HRK / Abstract übernommen)
