Abstract This chapter provides an analysis and interpretation of the key changes in higher education and their impact on teaching and research in the United Kingdom, and in particular England, between the two international surveys of the academic profession, in 1992 and 2007. It reports on the relevant responses to both surveys. It interprets the categorisation of the UK (by this book?s editors) as achieving a balance between teaching and research and concludes that the descriptions of the core activities of higher education institutions may be breaking down, requiring a reconceptualisation of academic work in the twenty-first century.
