Abstract Recent policy reforms have increased the use of performance indicators and output measures in European higher education. The retention and completion of students, used as both a performance indicator and output measure, has evolved into key component of recent policy reforms and is often cited as a primary reason to track student degree progression. In this text we outline the resources and data needed while providing a 3 step process as a guide to effectively track students. We conclude by discussing the increasing importance of tracking students in European higher education including its impact on funding, measuring institutional performance, and rankings.
