Abstract Countries differ widely in their academic traditions, the massification of their higher education systems, their wealth, and the emphasis they place on academic research. These differences are reflected in their levels of scientific productivity as measured by the number of refereed research articles. But the point in this chapter is to stress that refereed research articles are only one dimension of the research vitality of academic systems. It is also important to look at non-STEM fields and at other modes of research such as the publication of books, newspaper articles, and the development of artistic and musical expression.
