Abstract There is a growing discussion on various levels regarding the future of the university and especially also regarding its public role. This discussion relates to tendencies of privatization, economic globalization and the appearance of the so-called entrepreneurial university (including the entrepreneurial academic and student), but also to the implications of the rapid developments regarding the information and communication technologies (ICT) and the so-called learning sciences (e. g. Barnett 2011; Brandt 2011; Collini 2012; Docherty 2011; Elkana & Klöpper 2012; Fethke & Policano 2012; Holmwood 2011, to mention just a few recent ones). In this discussion functionalist (sociological/economical) and idealistic (philosophical) understandings of the university prevail. In this paper we want to offer some elements of a different approach. (HRK / Abstract übernommen)
