Abstract The creation of the University of Zielona Góra in the Lubuski Region of Poland, an ambitious undertaking, has been and still is the subject of debates. Some significant events and dates in the development of the academic environment in the Lubuski Region are listed. The development of the Technical University and of the Pedagogical University of Zielona Góra was supported by the regional and local authorities. The University of Zielona Góra, as an academic institution, is evolving into a modern university, the guiding educational idea and principles of which are those of respect for truth and for the thorough dissemination of knowledge.
