"Cross-Border Education and Development Co-Operation"

Bonn, 30 June – 1 July 2005

The education and training of young professionals from developing countries contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Postgraduate courses jointly organised by German universities and their partner institutions in developing countries and countries in transition are specifically designed to meet the particular training requirements of this target group. An international conference in Bonn discussed the frameworks for and practical realisation of such international training networks.

In view of the education and development policy potential of such partnership-based training and in the conviction that close cooperation in higher education is able to make important contributions to the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) jointly organised a conference on "Cross-Border Education and Development Cooperation”. The event is part of a joint series of conferences called "Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES)" which offers stakeholders from the field of higher education development cooperation a forum for discussion on various models of partnership-based training. Around 100 representatives from German universities and their partners from 20 developing and transition countries plus international education experts and representatives from politics and from organisations active in the field of development cooperation attended the conference.

The conference aimed at examining the prerequisites and the institutional and political frameworks required for successful international training networks. Furthermore, it was discussed what impulses cross-border education can provide for the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
