The President of the German Rectors' Conference, Prof Dr Walter Rosenthal, commented as follows on the KMK's forecast of the number of first-year students from 2023 to 2035 published today:
"The KMK's forecast shows that the number of first-year students will rise significantly again very soon. The decline due to the reduced number of school leavers is only temporary. The overall trend emphasises the continued central importance of universities in the German education system. It also emphasises that it remains essential for universities to receive adequate funding in line with this development. Universities continue to need the proven and reliable commitment of the federal and state governments in order to fulfil their legal mandate to a high standard of quality."
